Sporting reminiscent pre-war lines and that vertical Bentley-style grille, the Mark V appeared at the 1948 London Motor Show alongside the XK 120 sports car.

In addition to the new pressed steel chassis, the work of the firm’s chief engineer William Heynes and William Lyons himself, it brought other technological firsts: it was the first Jaguar with independent front suspension, the first with torsion bars, the first with hydraulic control in the four brakes, the first in which the frame passed over the rear axle, and the first specifically designed to also carry left-hand steering, with the American market in mind.

He was also the last to mount the old standard rocker arm engine (but manufactured by Jaguar itself after the war) whose design dated back to the 1930s.

The new Jaguar, marketed in 2.5 and 3.5-liter displacements, was quite successful in the US even though it cost twice as much as a Ford convertible ($ 3,850) but its career was short: it remained only three years in the catalog . It would be discontinued in 1951, replaced by the Mark VII.

Of the two bodies available, a four-door sedan or a two-door convertible coupe, the second was the least popular.

Both could accommodate five people in their interior in comfort.

Arguably, the Mark V Drophead Coupe was chosen by drivers who would have preferred an XK 120 but had a family: of the 1,005 built of this version, 977 had the most powerful engine, and 577 of them were left-hand drive.

The difference between a drophead coupe body like this Jaguar and the roadster or convertible lies in the design and functionality of the convertible roof.

The roadster has a simple soft top that can be folded or removed. The convertible is similar but better crafted, with the hood better sealed and upholstered inside.

And the drophead is the best of the three in terms of comfort, with a more careful finish and greater versatility of use; the retractable roof has three positions: closed, half open (landaulet type) or fully open.

Este Jaguar MKV ha sido restaurado y esta en perfecto estado.

Luciendo unas líneas reminiscentes de antes de la guerra y esa parrilla vertical al estilo Bentley el Mark V apareció en el Salón de Londres de 1948 junto con el deportivo XK 120.

Además del nuevo chasis de acero prensado, obra del ingeniero jefe de la firma William Heynes y del propio William Lyons, traía otras primicias tecnológicas: era el primer Jaguar con suspensión delantera independiente, el primero con barras de torsión, el primero con mando hidráulico en los cuatro frenos, el primero en el que el bastidor pasaba por encima del puente trasero, y el primero específicamente diseñado para llevar también dirección a la izquierda, pensando en el mercado americano.

Tambien fue el último que montó el viejo motor de balancines de origen Standard (pero fabricado por la propia Jaguar después de la guerra) cuyo diseño databa de los años 30.

El nuevo Jaguar, comercializado en cilindradas de 2,5 y 3,5 litros, tuvo bastante éxito en EE UU a pesar de que costaba el doble que un Ford convertible (3.850 $) pero su carrera resultó corta: permaneció apenas tres años en catálogo. Dejaría de fabricarse en 1951, sustituido por el Mark VII.

De las dos carrocerías disponibles, sedán de cuatro puertas o coupé descapotable de dos, la segunda fue la menos difundida.

Ambas podían acoger a cinco personas en su intrerior con toda comodidad.

Podría decirse que el Mark V Drophead Coupe era elegido por conductores que hubieran preferido un XK 120 pero tenían familia: de los 1.005 ejemplares construidos de esta versión, 977 montaban el motor más potente, y 577 de ellos volante a la izquierda.

La diferencia entre una carrocería tipo drophead coupe como la de este Jaguar y la del roadster o el convertible radica en el diseño y la funcionalidad del techo convertible.

El roadster dispone de una sencilla capota de lona que se puede plegar o desmontar. El convertible es similar pero mejor elaborado, con la capota mejor sellada y tapizada por dentro.

Y el drophead es el mejor de los tres en lo relativo al confort, con un acabado más cuidado y mayor versatilidad de uso; el techo retráctil tiene tres posiciones: cerrado, medio abierto (tipo landaulet) o totalmente abierto.
